The Vanderbilt Diabetes Center sponsors the Medical Student Summer Research Program in Diabetes, which is supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health through the NIDDK. Our program allows medical students to conduct research under the direction of an established scientist in the areas of diabetes, hormone action, physiology, islet cell biology, or obesity. Our preceptors represent a very broad range of research – from basic science to clinical science to translational science. Our program is separate from the Emphasis Program, but provides a complementary experience that will enhance your Emphasis Program experience.
Information about the Medical Student Summer Research Program in Diabetes:
-
You choose your preceptor (we can give you the names of possible preceptors - see link at left of page).
-
You must work with a preceptor who is in our Diabetes program (see link at left of page for a list of preceptors associated with our program).
-
Vanderbilt students must apply to the Medical Student Summer Research Program (do this after you select your preceptor – the deadline for applying to the diabetes program is February 8, 2010.
-
Our program has 25 students each summer (most students are from other medical schools and come to Vanderbilt to participate in the diabetes research program). As part of our program, Vanderbilt medical students accepted into the diabetes program interact with other students in the diabetes program and learn about different types of research from other students.
-
In addition to working on her/his research project, each student attends seminars addressing various clinical aspects of diabetes mellitus and its complications and a small group discussion about diabetes research (total of 3 hours/week for program-related meetings).
-
Our program will pay a stipend for up to 12 weeks (based on the number of weeks you work; same stipend/week as the Emphasis Program).
-
All students participating in the diabetes program present their research at a national scientific symposium for medical students at the end of the summer. The Vanderbilt Diabetes Center organizes this program in Nashville; approximately 80 medical students from around the US attend this symposium.
Application deadline for summer of 2010 is February 8, 2010.
